As a Reno local, I know first-hand that there’s a lot to love about this northern Nevada City an hour from Lake Tahoe. The city outgrew its gambling-and-quickie-divorces identity decades ago and is now fully in its artsy-outdoorsy era. Whenever I have friends in from out of town, I love showing off our 300 days of sunshine, wide-ranging culinary offerings and an arts and entertainment scene that blends indie vibes with a little of that golden age casino razzle dazzle.
Reno’s Outdoorsy Side
Reno (and nearby Tahoe) makes good use of its mountain and desert backdrops. I appreciate the mix of thrill-seeking adventures like skiing and snowboarding along with more laid-back activities like strolling through downtown Reno’s Riverwalk District. I love how the Riverwalk brings together great restaurants, bars, art, and even spots to cool off by the water, all in one walkable area.
One of my favorite hiking trails for families with young kids is the Chickadee Ridge Hiking Trail. The terrain is gentle and the experience is unforgettable—little chickadee birds will often fly right up to you and may even land on your head or shoulders, as long as you come prepared with bird food. In and out of town, hiking trails will take you along the Truckee River, up into the surrounding mountains, and into wide-open meadows that attract migrating birds throughout the year.

For unforgettable family adventures out of town, I recommend Piping Rock Horses just about thirty miles from Reno. The trail rides here are led by knowledgeable, experienced guides who not only ensure a safe ride but also share fun and educational insights about the horses, the surrounding landscape, and local history along the way.
And its artsy vibe
I like mixing and matching, so after a morning outdoors, I love diving into the city’s creative side. One of my favorite things about Reno is the intentional way art and culture are woven into everyday life throughout the city. From colorful murals splashed across buildings to meaningful tributes honoring Native American culture, art feels both accessible and deeply rooted in Reno’s history.
Downtown, you’ll also spot large-scale Burning Man sculptures, bringing a piece of “the playa” into the city and adding an element of surprise and creativity to your stroll. The Nevada Museum of Art is another standout, celebrating local and regional artists while highlighting the unique intersection of art, environment, and community that defines Northern Nevada. If you go, keep an eye out for the beautiful clock that runs on “Bristlecone time.”

For families, the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum is a must-visit, with lots of hands-on exhibits that encourage kids to explore science, art, and creativity in an engaging, interactive way.
When you know your dates, check for live performances and pop-up art events. Along with smaller independent theaters, the larger resorts and casinos draw big acts and Broadway shows.
The food scene
One of the things I love most about Reno is how diverse and approachable the food scene is. When I’m in the mood for something elevated with bold flavors, Arario is always at the top of my list—it’s my go-to spot for Korean-inspired dishes and a fun night out. For comfort food that never disappoints, Kwok’s Bistro has quickly become one of my new favorites, a longtime local gem known for its generous portions and classic Chinese dishes. And of course, Reno wouldn’t be Reno without its all-you-can-eat sushi. It’s such a unique part of the city’s dining culture, and I love how easy it is to sit down, try a little bit of everything, and enjoy incredibly fresh sushi without breaking the bank. My favorites for sushi include Ijji Sushi 1 in Sparks and KitzMo, both offering the classic rolls everyone knows as well as their own unique creations. No matter what I’m craving, Reno’s food scene always makes it easy to find something that feels both satisfying and memorable.
Reno hotels: My favorites
For the energy of the casino scene, I like spots like the Atlantis or Grand Sierra, where the gaming, entertainment, and dining options are all right there. For a quieter, more boutique experience, I’ve had great stays at Whitney Peak, which feels modern, relaxed, and central; or Renaissance, with its sleek design and comfortable rooms perfect for a getaway. Another favorite is Peppermill Reno, which strikes a nice balance—it has a lively casino vibe but also spacious, luxurious rooms and great restaurants.
Reno is one of those cities that always surprises me—there’s an energy here that’s both lively and welcoming, with something for everyone. From thrilling outdoor adventures and family-friendly hikes to an art scene that pops up around every corner, and a food culture that keeps me coming back for more, the city never feels one-dimensional. Whether I’m exploring museums, chasing murals, indulging in sushi, or enjoying a cozy stay at one of its many hotels, Reno feels like a place where I can create memories no matter what kind of trip I’m planning. Every visit reminds me that there’s always something new to discover, making me excited to come back again and again.
