The theme park that started it all in Walt Disney World, Magic Kingdom, is changing in big ways in the coming years. We’ve already seen some significant changes with openings over the last couple of years, including Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and The Beak and Barrel. At the 2024 D23 Disney Fan Event, Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro hinted at more exciting projects in the works at Magic Kingdom.
It’s safe to say that when everything is said and done, your day at the Magic Kingdom will be unlike anything you’ve experienced in the past! Let’s take a look at what is currently in development at Magic Kingdom and when we can expect these changes to take place.
New for 2025: nighttime parades and a swashbuckling tavern
At long last, Magic Kingdom has a nighttime parade once again. Over the summer of 2025, Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away debuted, marking the first new nighttime parade at Magic Kingdom in over a decade.
At present, Disney Starlight has two performances nightly, bookending the fireworks spectacular. Pro tip: the later of the two performances is typically less busy, giving you more time to enjoy the park before lining up to catch the parade!
Also new for 2025 is The Beak and Barrel, the new Pirates of the Caribbean-themed lounge that recently opened next to the classic Magic Kingdom attraction.
The tavern is an Imagineering marvel, with Easter Eggs found throughout the space referencing both Pirates of the Caribbean rides at Disney parks around the globe as well as the beloved film franchise. The menu offers something for pirates of all ages, with cocktails, mocktails, and food items.

Coming in 2026: ride reopenings with new enhancements
While 2025 brought new experiences to Magic Kingdom, 2026 will bring attractions with extended closures back online with some new enhancements. One of the rides anticipated to reopen sometime in 2026 is Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which has been closed since January of 2025.
At Destination D23, it was revealed that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen with a brand-new storyline and enhanced effects throughout the attraction. The new story is one of Barnabas T. Bullion, a man who found himself in a battle with the forces of nature as he excavated the Big Thunder region in search of gold. Some of the “new magic” fans can expect include a Rainbow Caverns scene.
Another ride expected to reopen in 2026 is Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. The fan-favorite Tomorrowland attraction closed over the summer of 2025 to begin an extensive refurbishment that includes the addition of brand-new ride vehicles, blasters, and an entirely new scoring system.

When it reopens in 2026, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will also include a brand new show scene with a new character, Buddy.
Walt Disney Animatronic Coming to Carousel of Progress
Fans were surprised to hear that a second Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic figure is coming to the Disney parks, this time to Magic Kingdom. The first debuted in 2025 at Disneyland Park in a new show called Walt Disney — A Magical Life.
The second Audio-Animatronic figure will not have a new show of its own. Rather, it will be added to a classic long-running attraction: Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress. The Audio-Animatronic will appear at the top of the show, with the entirety of Carousel of Progress receiving its first significant update in over 30 years.
When this project was announced, no exact timeline was given as to when fans can expect the Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic figure to be added to the attraction. Given that it’s happening alongside a significant refurb of the attraction, it may be several months or more before we see this project come to fruition.
Cinderella Castle to receive new colors inspired by original design
Another announcement that came during the most recent Destination D23 event was that the colors of Cinderella Castle will soon change. Since 2021, Cinderella Castle has had a simmering pink hue, debuting for the kickoff of Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. That will soon change, as Cinderella Castle will receive a makeover inspired by the classic and original color scheme.
When completed, Cinderella Castle will feature hues of “grays, creams, blues, and touches of gold aiming to enhance the castle’s architecture.” Be on the lookout for these changes as Magic Kingdom continues to transform in the coming years.
Piston Peak, ‘Cars’ charcters coming to reimagined section of Frontierland
The changes discussed so far are indeed exciting, but they don’t really change the footprint of the park. There are, however, a couple of major changes are on the way to Magic Kingdom — big enough to change the way we plan our days in this park forever! It was announced at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in 2024 that Pixar’s Cars would be on its way to a reimagined area in Frontierland.
This new area would feature two new attractions. The headliner rice is a thrilling rally race through the mountains. Think Radiator Springs Racers from Disney California Adventure, but more off-road and rugged. The second attraction will be geared towards younger guests and will be fun for the whole family.
These new rides will be part of an area of Frontierland called Piston Peak. This new area of Magic Kingdom will feature “Parkitecture,” which was developed by the National Park Service to create structures that harmonize with the natural environment.
In a press release sent by Disney, “To make way for this completely new frontier, the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island will be transformed into vast and rugged terrains for a rally race with some of the world’s most iconic racers.” In 2025, Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island closed permanently to make space for this new area.
Construction on this new area is currently underway. I would anticipate this will take several years to build, so expect the construction walls in and around Frontierland to stick around for a while.

Villains land coming beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Back during the Destination D23 event in 2023, D’Amaro hinted at fans learning what exists “beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.” This sure sounded like a new land being built on the other side of Frontierland, and Michael Hundgen, Walt Disney World site portfolio executive, stated, “It’s probably the largest expansion ever at Magic Kingdom,” per CNN. At the Disney Experiences Showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, it was offically announced that a villains themed land is in fact coming to Magic Kingdom!
According to Disney, this land will feature two major attractions, dining and shopping on “an incredibly twisted grand scale.” Details on this new land are still sparse as of this writing, but work is certainly underway. Imagineers gave a sneak peek at some of the Art Nouveau inspiration they drew from a trip to Europe, with a new phase they coined to describe the design aesthetic of the land: Conjured Architecture.
As of this writing, we do not have a timeline on when we can expect this villains-themed land to be completed. Because things are still a little vague, I would expect this land to be several years away. For now, I’m content to be thrilled that we’re finally getting a villains land at Disney World!
